Digital transformation in Italian SMEs

Digital transformation in Italian SMEs

Digital transformation is by now an inflated topic, and yet for most small and medium-sized Italian manufacturers it largely remains to be done. Not for lack of will, but because it is often told in abstract terms, far removed from the reality of a workshop with limited resources and tight schedules.

What it really means, on the shop floor

For a manufacturing SME, digital transformation is not "adopting AI" or "moving to the cloud". It is, much more concretely, no longer working without data: knowing how much the machines really produce, why they stop, what a job actually costs, where time is lost. It is the shift from managing by memory and scattered spreadsheets to decisions based on real numbers.

The real obstacles

  • Lack of time and IT staff: the tools must work without a dedicated department.
  • Heterogeneous machines, old and new, speaking different protocols.
  • Distrust: too many digital projects promised and never landed have left scepticism behind.

A sustainable approach

The transformation that works, in SMEs, is incremental. You don't digitalise everything at once: you start from the bottleneck machine, collect few but useful data points (states, times, stops), code the main downtime reasons, and watch. Within a few weeks the data stops being a promise and becomes a decision-making lever. From there you extend, one step at a time.

The starting point

The first building block is always the same: putting machines in a position to talk and making their data visible to decision-makers. That is exactly VMES45's mission: an MES designed for Italian SMEs, bringing data to the shop floor without requiring big-company skills or infrastructure. Digital transformation, for an SME, starts here — and it starts small.
